Initial rental explained

The initial rental is the first rental in a contract-hire payment profile. It is not a refundable deposit and does not buy part of the vehicle.

Reviewed 30 August 2026

What an initial rental means

A profile described as 9+35 normally means an initial rental equal to nine monthly rentals followed by 35 monthly rentals. A 1+35 profile has a smaller initial payment but usually larger subsequent rentals.

The exact monetary initial rental is shown in the quotation. It is normally collected shortly after delivery under the schedule set by the finance provider.

It is not a deposit

An initial rental is non-refundable and does not create equity or ownership. You do not receive it back when the vehicle is returned.

Avoid describing the initial rental as a deposit when comparing offers. A separate holding or processing payment, if any, must be identified and explained before order.

Compare total commitment

A low monthly headline can be paired with a large initial rental. Add the initial rental, all subsequent rentals and the £199 administration fee to understand the displayed commitment.

Insurance, fuel or electricity, maintenance where not included, excess mileage and potential return charges sit outside that simple total.

Choose a comfortable profile

A larger initial rental may reduce the regular monthly amount, but it also concentrates more cost at the beginning. Choose a profile that remains affordable without using emergency funds.

If you alter the initial-rental profile on this website, a live lender quotation is required. We do not calculate an unsupported replacement price.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions.

Is the initial rental refundable?

No. It is the first non-refundable rental under the agreement.

Does a larger initial rental mean I own more of the car?

No. Contract hire does not give you ownership regardless of the initial-rental size.

When is the initial rental collected?

The payment timing is set by the finance provider and confirmed in the quotation and agreement, often shortly after delivery.
